Red Squirrels Prosper in the Lake District
After years of decline, there has been an increase in the number of sightings of red squirrels in the Lake District.
More and more sightings are being reported in numerous areas, including Ambleside and Bowness. Ongoing efforts to reduce the population of grey squirrels, which carry a disease fatal to reds, are thought to be behind the increase, alongside conservation projects and the preservation of woodland habitats.
This marks a major victory for the red squirrels, up until which their numbers have been declining for the last 140 years.
